Coonrod made just 10 appearances at the big league level in 2023, posting an unsightly 9.45 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and a 6/8 K/BB ratio in 6 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old hurler is now free to explore the open market.

Coonrod has been shipped back to the minors to make room for southpaw Joey Lucchesi to come up and make a spot start on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

He’ll take the place of the injured Carlos Carrasco (finger) on the Mets’ active roster. The 30-year-old right-hander has been terrific in his limited time with the Mets this season, posting a 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and a 5/4 K/BB ratio over 5 1/3 innings. He should be a fixture in their bullpen over the final month of the regular season.

Coonrod was activated from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut earlier this month and heads back to the minors following seven solid relief appearances for the Mets. The 30-year-old veteran righty figures to return in a few weeks, if not sooner.
