Hurst

Hurst got into seven games for the Cardinals during the 2021 campaign and wound up going 0-for-5 at the dish. The 27-year-old outfielder was batting .133/.278/.133 with two RBI and four steals across 36 plate appearances in 10 games this season for Triple-A Memphis. He put up decent numbers last year in the upper minors and should get another shot somewhere else.

Hurst cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization.

Hurst fell victim to a roster crunch as the Cardinals needed to add lefty reliever Brandon Waddell back to the 40-man roster on Saturday afternoon. The 25-year-old outfielder appeared in seven games at the major-league level back in April. He’ll remain with the Cardinals if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

The Cardinals had to make room on the roster after activating Johan Ovideo to start on Wednesday and Hurst was the odd man out. The 25-year-old was recalled on April 15 and went hitless over five at-bats.

Lane Thomas is heading to the alternate site in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old will have a chance to make his MLB debut if he gets into games, and that seems likely. Hurst has almost no offensive upside, but can help St. Louis because of his speed and defense.
