Munetaka Murakami is not in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Orioles.
It’s a routine day off for Murakami, but it probably doesn’t hurt that the Orioles are pitching left-hander Trevor Rogers. Murakami has gone 1-for-6 with four strikeouts in eight plate appearances against lefties this season, so that could be something to watch as the season goes on. The 26-year-old has plenty of power, but is also hitting .206 with a 31 percent strikeout rate so far this season. Lenyn Sosa will start at first base and bat second with Miguel Vargas shifting to DH, and Tanner Murray entering the lineup at third base and batting sixth.
  • CWS 2nd Baseman #41
White Sox recalled INF Tanner Murray from Triple-A Charlotte.
Murray got off to a strong start at Triple-A Charlotte, slashing .304/.467/.609 with a pair of homers, seven RBI, two stolen bases and a 7/6 K/BB ratio in his first 30 plate appearances. It’ll be interesting to see if he can carve out any sort of real role in his first taste of MLB action.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #66
White Sox optioned RHPs Wikelman González and David Sandlin and INF Tanner Murray to Triple-A Charlotte.
González will open the season in the minors after posting a strong 2.66 ERA and 25/12 K/BB ratio across 20 1/3 innings over 16 relief appearances for the White Sox last year. Sandlin was the key piece Chicago acquired for taking on the remainder of Jordan Hicks’ albatross contract from the Red Sox last month.
  • CWS 2nd Baseman #41
Tanner Murray is day-to-day after leaving Saturday’s game against the Mariners with a right finger injury.
Murray was hit in his finger in the win over Seattle. The good news is that X-rays came back negative, so the 26-year-old infielder should be able to return to the lineup in the coming days.
  • CWS 3rd Baseman #84
Tanner Murray hit his second homer of the spring Thursday in a loss to the Dodgers.
Murray was a fringy 40-man roster guy after hitting .241/.299/.400 in Triple-A last season, but the White Sox liked him enough to acquire him from the Rays and protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and now he’s opened this spring with two homers and a double in nine at-bats. The White Sox have several out-of-options bench candidates, so Murray has little shot of winning a spot out of spring training. His opportunity could come this summer if other players disappoint.
  • CWS 2nd Baseman
White Sox acquired 2B Tanner Murray and OF Everson Pereira from the Rays for RHP Steven Wilson and RHP Yoendrys Gómez.
Murray bolsters Chicago’s organizational infield depth after hitting .241/.299/.400 with 8 homers and five steals over 137 games for Triple-A Durham this past season. The 26-year-old infielder was a fourth-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft and has yet to ascend to the big leagues.
  • TB 2nd Baseman
Tanner Murray hit the second of three ninth-inning homers as the Rays came back to a tie a Tigers split-squad 7-7 on Thursday.
Tres Barrera and Tristan Peters also had solo shots off Matt Seelinger to knot up the game. Murray, a 2020 fourth-round pick, went unselected in the Rule 5 draft after batting .290/.328/.424 in 111 games for Double-A Montgomery last season. His ability to hit singles and doubles is legitimate, but he’s probably not strong enough in terms of defense, power or speed to have a future in the majors.
  • TB 3rd Baseman #77
Jose Caballero left Thursday’s game after fouling a ball off his foot.
Tanner Murray took over. The Rays will likely have Caballero undergo further testing to make sure there’s no structural damage.
  • TB Shortstop
The Rays optioned SS/3B Junior Caminero and INF/OF Greg Jones, INF Austin Shenton and RHP Yoniel Curet to Triple-A Durham; reassigned OFs Ruben Cardenas, Niko Hulsize, Kameron Misner, Tristan Peters, C Logan Driscoll, LHP Antonio Jimenez, RHP Enmanuel Mejia, INFs Tanner Murray and Carson Williams to minor league camp.
It’s now official that one of the top fantasy prospects in baseball will open the season in the minors. In nine spring games, the 20-year-old went 7-for-26 (.269) with one homer and four RBI. It was reported earlier in February that the team was unlikely to have Caminero on the Opening Day roster due to his inexperience at the professional level. We’ll see if the team decides to play him at shortstop or third base given the Amed Rosario signing this offseason, but expect the young prospect to be called up if there is an injury on that side of the infield. The other notable name here is Carson Williams, who has some diverging opinions from scouts and evaluations, but is generally viewed as one of the most promising middle infield prospects in the game entering this season.
