Harikkala

Although he struggled at the end of the season, Harikkala was still the Rockies’ second most valuable reliever behind Steve Reed. He is 33, so this is as good as he’s going to get. Still, he shouldn’t have made it all the way to the A’s on waivers. He’ll be given a chance to win a bullpen job in spring training.

It’s a split contract. Harikkala will receive $100,000 if he begins the year in the minors. Because of Oakland’s recent trades, there’s little chance that he’ll make the team.

Harikkala allowed nine runs in 12 2/3 IP during his time with the A’s.

He’s now a free agent.

The 35-year-old Harikkala will get the start Sunday against the Mets. It will be his first major league appearance since June 2005 and his first start since 1996.

Harikkala gave up three runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings Sunday in his spot start against the Cubs. The Rockies will try someone else next time through the rotation.

Harikkala has a 0.73 ERA in 12 1/3 innings this spring, but he’s likely to be a victim of the Rockies’ roster crunch. Because he’s not on the 40-man roster, he could have to wait his turn while pitching for Triple-A Colorado Springs.
