Tony Wolters retired Sunday after seven big-league seasons.
He said he’s accepted a coaching spot in the Rockies organization. Wolters never did hit much, but he was an excellent defensive catcher. The incredible thing there is that he actually spent his first two pro seasons as a middle infielder before making the move behind the plate. Wolters got all but 34 of his plate appearances as a major leaguer with the Rockies and hit .262/.337/.329 in 411 plate appearances in his one full year as a starter in 2019. Overall, he came in at .235/.321/.314 in 407 games.

Twins signed C Tony Wolters to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Wolters logged only four MLB plate appearances in 2022 -- all with the Dodgers -- and struck out three times. He spent the majority of the season with their Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City, slashing .230/.321/.284 across 61 games played. The 30-year-old will function as organizational depth behind the plate for Minnesota in 2023.

Dodgers purchased the contract of C Tony Wolters from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
With Austin Barnes heading to he family medical emergency list, Wolters will join the big league club to function as the primary backup behind Will Smith. The 30-year-old has hit just .216/.311/.270 with no homers and 24 RBI in 193 plate appearances at Triple-A this season.

  • MLB Outfield #29
Dodgers reassigned DH Stefen Romero, OF Kevin Pillar, RHPs Reyes Moronta, Shane Greene and Yency Almonte, Cs Tomás Telis and Tony Wolters and INF Eddy Alvarez to minor league camp.
Romero was signed as a potential designated hitter option back in February and won’t crack the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster. The only real surprise here is Pillar, who made a serious bid for a spot as a reserve outfielder this spring. He declined to opt-out of his minor league contract over the weekend, so he’ll likely head to Triple-A Oklahoma City to start the season.

    Cubs released C Tony Wolters.
Wolters appeared in 14 games for the Cubs, hitting .125/.275/.125 across 30 plate appearances before being designated for assignment and sent outright to Triple-A Iowa back in May. The 29-year-old old doesn’t offer much from an offensive standpoint, but he’s a capable emergency stopgap catching option at this stage of his career.
