Zych hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2017 and likely faces an uphill battle to crack the Yankees’ loaded bullpen. The 29-year-old has been out of the league the past two years while rehabbing various injuries. He holds a lifetime 2.72 ERA across 70 major league appearances (one start), all as a Mariner.

Zych was nearing mound work at last check, but his right shoulder is again giving him problems and there’s currently no exact timetable for his return to the Seattle bullpen. The righty reliever had a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts over his first 12 innings this season.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster. Zych suffered another setback with his right rotator cuff earlier this month and doesn’t appear to close to returning to the Mariners’ bullpen.

He’s been playing catch without issue for the last two weeks, but mound work is always the major test. Zych was placed on the disabled list May 4. He had a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts over his first 12 innings this season.

Zych’s recovery from tendinitis in his rotator cuff is going slowly, as he’s had multiple setbacks. He hasn’t appeared in a game since May 1 and it doesn’t appear he’s resumed a throwing program.

He allowed an unearned run in a one-inning appearance Friday with the Mariners’ affiliate in the rookie-level Arizona League. It was his rehab debut. Zych missed much of the summer with a rotator cuff injury and may have reaggravated it. He was demoted to Tacoma last week after allowing two walks and three hits over his first 1 2/3 innings (two appearances) coming off the 60-day major league disabled list.

Zych just returned Tuesday from a three-month rotator cuff injury, but he allowed two walks and three hits over his first 1 2/3 innings (two appearances) out of the Seattle bullpen. He’ll try to get right at Triple-A.

Zych will be available out of the Seattle bullpen on Tuesday night against the Yankees after missing nearly three full months with right rotator cuff tendinitis. He had a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 12 innings of relief before landing on the shelf.
