He’ll take the spot of Scott Linebrink (shoulder). Marte pitched well at Triple-A last year for the Cards, posting a 1.44 ERA over 55 appearances, and he allowed just one run over 10 innings this spring. He’s 31, though, and holds a career 9.30 ERA and 26/27 K/BB ratio over 39 2/3 big league innings. Needless to say, we’re not expecting much.

He was sent down to make room for Brian Fuentes on the active roster. Marte, 31, has a 4.46 ERA and 33/13 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings this season. He figures to return to the major league level later this summer.

Marte posted a 4.46 ERA and 33/13 K/BB ratio across 38 1/3 innings with the Cardinals earlier this season. The right-hander will return to his role in middle relief.

Marte was sporting a 2.78 ERA and 23/9 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. The right-hander will function as a middle reliever for the Cardinals.

Marte allowed one run and two walks over an inning over work in Tuesday’s loss. The Cardinals have called up Maikel Cleto to take his place in the bullpen.

Marte was knocked around for six runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings this spring. The veteran right-hander will serve as bullpen depth in the minors.

The move clears room on the 40-man roster for Joey Butler, who was claimed off waivers Thursday. Marte, 32, posted a 4.94 ERA over 45 games at Triple-A Memphis this season.

Marte signed with the Royals last December after spending the previous three seasons in Japan. The 28-year-old right-hander had a 2.24 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 39 games between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha this season.

Marte was called up to the big leagues in September of last season and posted an ugly 8.25 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in 12 innings of relief. The 29-year-old righty had a 2.13 ERA and a 53/25 K/BB ratio in 42 1/3 frames during his time at Triple-A Omaha, though, and could find his way back to the majors this season.

Marte was designated for assignment at the beginning of this month to clear a 40-man roster spot for outfielder Joey Butler, who was claimed off waivers from the Rangers. Marte has a big arm but hasn’t found MLB success.
