    Diamondbacks signed OF Wagner Mateo.
Mateo, 17, will get a $512,000 bonus from the Diamondbacks, a fraction of the $3.1 million he was to receive from the Cardinals last summer. That contract with the Redbirds was voided after the club voiced concerns over the vision in his right eye. His star has faded a bit, but the Diamondbacks still obviously believe he has the potential to be an impact player in the big leagues.

    Diamondbacks released OF Wagner Mateo.
Mateo never made it past High-A in the Diamondbacks’ system, batting .230/.312/.349 in 201 low-level minor league games. The Dominican outfielder was nearly signed by the Cardinals in 2009 for a bonus of $3.1 million, but that agreement was voided after he was found to have vision problems in his right eye during his pre-signing physical. The 21-year-old could be done with MLB-affiliated ball.

According to ESPN.com’s Jorge Arangure, the Cardinals have agreed to terms with Dominican outfielder Wagner Mateo.
Mateo, 16, will receive a $3.1 million bonus on July 2, when the international signing period officially gets underway. The Giants were also in the hunt, but St. Louis GM John Mozeliak reportedly sealed the deal with a house-call.

    Cardinals signed outfielder Wagner Mateo.
Mateo, a 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic, received a $3.1 million signing bonus, which stands as the second-highest chunk of money ever tendered to a Latin American amateur. The Giants were also in the hunt, but Cardinals GM John Mozeliak sealed the deal with an in-home visit.

Jorge Arangure Jr. of ESPN.com reports that Wagner Mateo may sign with the Giants within the “next couple of weeks.”
Mateo, a 16-year-old outfielder, was set to receive a historic $3.1 million signing bonus from the Cardinals, but his contract was voided after a physical revealed problems with his vision. It’s safe to assume Mateo won’t get anywhere near that amount should he sign with San Francisco.

Cardinals have terminated the contract of outfielder Wagner Mateo.
The Cardinals came to terms with the 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic in July. However, the contract was contingent upon a physical exam, the result of which revealed pre-existing injuries and defects, the most serious of is a condition that affects his vision. It is a shocking turn of events for someone who was considered to be among the top amateur free agents in Latin America. Mateo was supposed to receive a $3.1 million signing bonus, the second-largest total ever granted to a Latin American amateur.

Sources have informed Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News that the Giants are a long way from an agreement with outfielder Wagner Mateo.
Several media outlets reported in October that the Giants were close to inking the 16-year-old Dominican, but times have changed. The Giants are now simply “keeping tabs” on the situation, according to Baggarly. Mateo was signed by the Cardinals in July, but the contract was terminated after it was revealed the talented youngster has a degenerative eye issue.

According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, Dominican outfielder Wagner Mateo is scheduled to work out for the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Mateo, who turns 17 on March 30, was signed by the Cardinals last July, but the contract was terminated two months later over concerns about the vision in his right eye. He was connected in talks with the Giants in October.

Dominican outfielder Wagner Mateo was given a tryout with the A’s on Thursday, sources told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Cardinals signed Mateo to a $3.1 million deal last year, but the contract was voided when he was revealed to have a degenerative eye disease. The 17-year-old has also visited with the Giants and Diamondbacks.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that there has been “very little recent dialogue” between the Diamondbacks and Dominican outfielder Wagner Mateo.
Melissa Segura of SI.com reported earlier this evening that the Diamondbacks are expected to sign Mateo by the end of the month, however Piecoro reports that there’s no indication that a signing is imminent. We had a similar false alarm between the Giants and Mateo last fall, so stay tuned.
