Reds designated infielder William Bergolla for assignment.
When Mike Burns and Brandon Watson are still on the 40-man roster? Bergolla’s stock has dropped this year, but he’s just 23 and there’s still a chance that he’ll develop into a useful player. He’s certainly a better bet than Burns, who managed to give up 30 hits in 13 1/3 innings for the Reds earlier this season. He’s hitting .266/.301/.342 in 357 at-bats for Triple-A Louisville.
  • DET 2nd Baseman
Reds sent infielder William Bergolla outright to Triple-A Louisville.
No team believed the 23-year-old Bergolla was worthy of a 40-man roster spot after four disappointing months at Triple-A. He’ll have to accept the assignment to Louisville.

William Bergolla went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for Caracas of the VWL tonight.
He’s 7-for-17 with a couple of walks. The 22-year-old Bergolla seemed overmatched while in the majors this season, but he’s a prospect. After returning to Triple-A for another year, he could be considered for a utility role or perhaps even the starting job at second base in 2007.

Reds recalled infielder William Bergolla from Triple-A Louisville.
Bergolla looked pretty overmatched during his first stint with the Reds, going 5-for-35 with nine strikeouts and no walks. He shouldn’t get many additional at-bats this time. His roster spot will eventually go to Anderson Machado.

Reds optioned infielder William Bergolla to Triple-A Louisville.
Bergolla went 5-for-35 with a 9/0 K/BB ratio in 20 days with the Reds. He shouldn’t return until September.
  • DET 2nd Baseman
William Bergolla has been placed on Triple-A Louisville’s disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
Bergolla, sent down by the Reds last week, was hurt running out an infield single.

Reds optioned infielder William Bergolla to Triple-A Louisville.
He wasn’t immediately replaced on the roster, but we assume Anderson Machado will be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday to take the spot.
  • WSH Third Base Coach
Nationals signed infielders Antonio Perez, William Bergolla, Yurendell de Caster, Luis Jimenez and Ed Rogers to minor league contracts and invited them to spring taining.
Perez was a bust the last two years, but he hardly got a chance to play in 2006 as Oakland’s 25th man and he was injured for much of last season. He could yet prove to be a capable hitter in the majors. However, whether his defense will still hold up following injuries and concerns about his conditioning remains to be seen. Bergolla is still young at 24 and offers plenty of defense at second base. He never developed as hoped, but he doesn’t need to take a huge leap forward in order to be an adequate option as a backup. Jimenez, 25, hit .328/.399/.591 at Double-A Portland last season, but he flopped in Triple-A. The former Orioles prospect probably won’t ever be anything more than a minor league slugger.

Nationals reassigned INF Antonio Perez, C Devin Ivany, INF William Bergolla, INF-OF Yurendell de Caster, OF Roger Bernadina, OF Frank Diaz, OF Tommy Murphy and OF Jorge Padilla to minor league camp.
There’s been no word, but we’re guessing Perez is still limited after missing most of last season. He didn’t make an appearance in a game this spring.
