Pagenaud will sport No. 1 in 2017 IndyCar season

Newly crowned Verizon IndyCar Series champion Simon Pagenaud’s car will sport the No. 1 for the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season, Team Penske president Tim Cindric confirmed on Wednesday.

Pagenaud will switch from the No. 22, which was on his car in his first two seasons with Team Penske as the team added a fourth car. Pagenaud’s car this year carried support from Menards, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, PPG Automotive Refinish and DeVilbiss.

It would, in theory, open up the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 12 provided Team Penske continues with a four-car lineup in 2017, as is likely but not 100 percent confirmed.

The No. 1 last ran for teammate Will Power in 2015, and Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2013, but is at the champion’s discretion.

NBCSN contributor Robin Miller wrote yesterday for that he expects Josef Newgarden to switch to Team Penske in 2017, replacing Juan Pablo Montoya.

Newgarden’s contract with Ed Carpenter Racing expires later this month and any formal announcement of a switch for him would come from Team Penske directly.
