Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson each had good chances to win Sunday’s Daytona 500, only to come up short for different reasons.
Gordon led a race-high 87 laps but a decision to take a mid-race restart on the outside line cost him the lead. Gordon would climb back into the top-10 late, but was caught in a last-lap crash during the green-white-checkered finish and had to settle for 33rd.
Johnson had a much better result, finishing in fifth place. But along the way, he was penalized following a green-flag pit stop for having too many crew members over the wall too soon. That sent him to the rear of the field at the time.
