Blown tire sends Joey Logano to garage for repairs early at Texas

Joey Logano’s bid to come back from his confrontation last Sunday with Matt Kenseth at Martinsville has not gotten off to a good start in Sunday’s AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Logano, who started the race in the fourth position, spun on Lap 10 after it appeared his left rear tire shredded into pieces.

Logano made his way to pit road riding only on the rim of his Ford Fusion. His team attempted to make repairs but after he dropped two laps off the pace, chose to take his car to the garage for additional repairs.

Debris from the tire caused damage within the car, including affecting radio communication wires, yet another thing the team is working on to repair.

“It just blew apart off turn 2 and the left rear tire just came apart and shredded everything inside the car,” Logano told NBC Sports. “It ripped everything apart. It’s not what we needed to do. We need to win. We’re not out of it. This team’s not quitting yet. We’re going to go to Phoenix and try to win that one. It just wasn’t in the plans today.”

In addition, a crew member for Logano’s team, Steve Williams, was working on the car when some hot oil dripped upon his face. Williams was taken to the infield care center for treatment.

Logano returned to the race on Lap 77 after repairs were made, 65 laps behind the leaders.
