Celtics sign G Jamar Smith to a partially-guaranteed minimum contract.
Smith shot 39.3 percent from downtown while playing in the Czech Republic last year, and was similarly proficient during Summer League in Orlando. He’s likely to end up back in the D-League unless something happens to Rajon Rondo, Jason Terry and/or Keyon Dooling.
  • Point Guard #33
Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston believes Dionte Christmas has the “inside track” for the Celtics final roster spot.
Forsberg makes it clear that it’s only his prediction, but the choice is going to come down to keeping either Christmas or Jamar Smith. Forsberg notes Christmas’ versatility as well as a “well-rounded game,” but also believes that he’ll have to continue to impress during training camp to convince the Celtics to carry 15 players.
  • BOS Point Guard
ESPN Boston believes Jamar Smith faces the “longest odds” to make the final roster.
Smith is competing with Dionte Christmas and Kris Joseph for a roster spot, and it would be considered an upset if Smith made it over either player.
  • Small Forward #32
Kris Joseph, Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith are all competing for the same spot on the roster.
Joseph was the second-round pick of the team in 2012 while the other two were undrafted free-agent signings. The real battle is between Joseph and Christmas, as Smith is highly unlikely to make the final cut.
  • BOS Point Guard
Jamar Smith will play In Israel with Gilboa Galil.
Smith was cut loose by the Celtics in training camp, but he’ll continue his overseas career after spending last season in Czech Republic.
  • BOS Point Guard
Jamar Smith, who is on a non-guaranteed deal, is expected to get a “closer look” following the retirement of Keyon Dooling.
The C’s have a need for a reserve PG behind Rajon Rondo, and although Smith plays both positions, CSNNE.com notes that he’s “looked a lot more comfortable off the ball.” It would be a surprise to see him make the final roster.
  • BOS Point Guard
    Celtics waive Jamar Smith.
Smith had a chance to make the team once Keyon Dooling retired, but he didn’t do enough to justify Boston tying up another roster spot.
  • Small Forward #32
Kris Joseph has reportedly made the Celtics roster.
An earlier report indicated that Dionte Christmas had an inside track to a roster spot, but the team has reportedly waived both Christmas and Jamar Smith. We’ll pass along more details if and when the word becomes official.
  • NBA Point Guard #1
The Celtics are expected to look for another veteran player, likely a point guard to back up Rajon Rondo.
With the team having waived Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith on Tuesday and Keyon Dooling having retired before that, the C’s are thin behind Rondo at the point. Doc Rivers brushed off the notion that it had to be a PG, but given the makeup of Boston’s roster, that would be the most logical fit. Right now, Jason Terry is primed to assume backup PG duties.
