It didn’t take long at all for Jeff Green to reach deal to return to the Celtics this summer, it was announced back the first week of July that he had agreed terms on what apparently is a four-year, $36 million deal to stay with the Celtics (after missing last season for heart surgery).
But ink has never been put to paper to formally sign the deal.
Until today.
First Green’s agent told Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated that the deal was about to be signed.
Then Wednesday Green tweeted:
It appears the deal is done.
The delay was really more about maneuverability for Boston — they had his Bird rights and could sign him at any time, but leaving that salary off the books officially left Boston more cap space to maneuver and fill out the bench. Once he signed they were pretty locked in.
Sounds like Boston’s roster is set. Boston comes back for a title run with a deeper, better team on paper than they had last season.
I’m glad to see Green back in the league after last year and think Boston is a good fit. That said, I still think $9 million a year is overpaying a slightly above average wing player — he can score but is not terribly efficient, is not great from three (career 33.7 percent) and his defense is spotty. Boston brass loves him, but this feels like a bet on potential, and there is a reason Oklahoma City was willing to move him.
But we’ll see. It is official and Green will be with Boston for years.
