Spurs pick up Summer League sharpshooter Gary Neal

The Spurs have mastered the art of the quiet off-season move, so file this one away with the others: San Antonio has agree to a three-year deal with Summer Leaguer Gary Neal, according to Jonathan Givony of Draft Express (via Ridiculous Upside).

There really isn’t an opportunity for Neal to waltz into consistent minutes, but this is still a nice contingency move by San Antonio. The Spurs were supposedly courting James Jones to fill in minutes on the wing, but now that he’s re-signed with the Heat, they did something pretty impressive: Went out and got a guy who looked absolutely just as prolific from deep in Summer League, defends pretty well, and has professional basketball seasoning.

Not a big splash nor a far-reaching one, but a solid pick-up for the Spurs nonetheless. The guy can hit from outside (Neal connected on 17 of his 34 three-point attempts in Vegas, including a 6-of-10 showing from beyond the arc in his Summer League finale), and that’s about all it takes for Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan to turn Neal into a quality role player.
