Jacobs was just released from his playing contract on Monday. Jacobs joined the Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2011, but he participated in just five regular-season games before joining the Panthers in 2014. He became a special teams mainstay in Carolina, so it is not surprising that is where he will begin his coaching career.

Jacobs’ contract was expiring anyway, but the Panthers did him a favor by allowing Jacobs to test the market early. Without this transaction, Jacobs would’ve had to wait for March 13 to shop his wares. He’s a core special teamer.

They will take the roster spots of SLB Scott Fujita (hand) and RE Emmanuel Stephens (pectoral), who were both lost for the season with injuries sustained in Week 12.

The Browns’ linebacker has taken a hit with Titus Brown also suffering a “significant” knee injury. Both players are candidates for injured reserve so late in the season.

A 2011 undrafted free agent, Jacobs appeared in five games for the Browns as a rookie before a concussion ended his season. He was out of the league in 2012. He’s just a camp body for the Panthers.

Jacobs will likely contribute on special teams if active this week. He’s taking Jon Beason’s spot on the 53-man roster.

Robinson was signed in 2009 to fit Rob Ryan’s 3-4 scheme. At 6'4/295, he was a man without a position in Dick Jauron’s 4-3 defense. English went undrafted in 2010 after a productive career at Oklahoma.
