Branch won’t make New Orleans’ final roster barring a couple of injuries, but could land on the practice squad again. His chances will increase next year if Deuce McAllister is released or traded.

The second-year player was outplayed and made expendable by undrafted rookie Pierre Thomas. The Saints likely won’t put him on the practice squad.

Branch was among New Orleans’ final cuts and shouldn’t see playing time for the Steelers this season. McBean and Baker were draft choices.

Branch will probably stay on the active roster for the final three weeks of the season, but only see a role in the backfield if more injuries strike.

Branch, a 225-pounder from Colgate, has flashed in the preseason but never played much in real games. He adds depth with Pierre Thomas mending.

The Saints initially called McKenzie’s injury a “sprain,” but this move indicates it could be something more serious considering the team is still in the playoff hunt. McKenzie is still one of the league’s better cover corners, but will be 32 next season and a torn ligament could cost him some effectiveness.

Jay Bellamy will start at strong safety and Antwan Lake will be the third defensive tackle. Branch, who scored a receiving TD in Week 17, has a chance for a roster spot in 2007 if Deuce McAllister is moved.
