USC QB John David Booty’s hands were measured at size eight, which is considered “extremely small” for an NFL quarterback.
Alex Smith’s hands are bigger. Booty was an accurate college passer and is intelligent, but physical limitations are the biggest knock against him.
  • HOU Quarterback
John David Booty reportedly outperformed Sage Rosenfels during Organized Team Activities and minicamps.
Booty has a year in Darrell Bevell’s offense and Rosenfels was acquired this offseason, so this isn’t all that surprising. It definitely does not mean J.D. would be a better bet in a game. Rosenfels has a stronger arm and way more experience. It’s not a big concern if he struggled in shorts and shells.
  • HOU Quarterback
Vikings coach Brad Childress indicated that John David Booty has improved his conditioning this offseason.
Booty was 6'3/213 coming out of USC last offseason. “He’s not Charles Atlas right now or anything like that, but he looked pretty good when I saw him,” Childress said. Booty will likely keep his No. 3 QB role this season.
  • HOU Quarterback
Vikings released QB John David Booty from their practice squad.
So much for all that talk that Booty’s presence would allow the team to trade Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels. The Vikings obviously never thought highly of the 2008 fifth-round pick. Still, he should catch on elsewhere shortly.
  • HOU Quarterback
Vikings waived QB John David Booty.
Maybe the Vikings aren’t going to trade Tarvaris Jackson after all. Booty looked pretty bad in the preseason, but he’ll almost certainly get some bites from other teams like the Jaguars.
  • HOU Quarterback
The Vikings intend to sign John David Booty to their practice squad if he makes it through waivers unclaimed.
It’s probably not going to happen though. Plenty of teams that use West Coast offenses like Minnesota’s (St. Louis, Green Bay, Washington) could view Booty as an upgrade over what they have on their current rosters, or as an intriguing project. He’s definitely got more potential than Rams No. 3 Keith Null.
  • HOU Quarterback
John David Booty was pulled from the Vikings preseason finale after one attempt when he threw a pick-six followup to Sage Rosenfels’ own pick-six.
If the Vikings do consider themselves Super Bowl contenders, they need to keep Tarvaris Jackson and send Booty through waivers. Jackson looked better than Rosenfels for the second straight week as well.
  • HOU Quarterback
Vikings signed QB John David Booty to their practice squad.
It’s pretty surprising that the Redskins, Rams, and Packers showed no interest. Booty, the Vikes’ fifth-round pick in 2008, may resurface on the Minnesota’s active roster if they can pull off a trade of Tarvaris Jackson.
  • FA Quarterback #18
SI.com’s Peter King believes Sage Rosenfels was the Vikings’ starting quarterback before Tarvaris Jackson suffered a sprained MCL in Saturday’s practice.
“And I wouldn’t be surprise if John David Booty beat out Jackson for the backup job,” King writes. We believe Rosenfels will win the job, and it sounds like Brad Childress’ attachment to Jackson has potentially been overstated. Rosenfels has received mixed reviews at best at early practices, but it may not matter.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the “feeling around the league” is that the Vikings will try to trade Tarvaris Jackson after signing Brett Favre.
Schefter says third QB J.D. Booty is safe, and the prevailing belief is that Jackson is the odd man out. It’s worth noting that the NFL Network reported in mid-June that Jackson would request a trade if Favre became a Viking. The Vikings wouldn’t get much, though, and Jackson’s stock has further plummeted after an atrocious preseason opener and in-camp knee injury.
