Buccaneers signed Boise State G John Molchon.
Molchon (6'5/317) started 42 games at four of the five offensive line positions over his career in Boise State’s pro-style balanced attack. While he projects as a backup tackle best suited for any zone-blocking scheme, his all-around versatility, brute strength (he hang cleans 425), and sheer toughness (played through a broken foot in his final year) are coveted traits that give him a solid floor as a multi-year contributor.

  • NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein writes that Boise State G John Molchon “lacks the traits and consistency of an NFL guard.”
"[Molchon is] a knowledgeable blocker who knows how to get from Point A to Point B, but lacks NFL athleticism or drive power,” Zierlein writes of the 6-foot-5, 309-pounder. While the analyst has little love for the athletic tools, here, Molchon actually tested out quite well at the NFL Scouting Combine, recording a SPARQ athleticism score in the 70th percentile of NFL offensive linemen. Still, it might be an uphill climb for a Day 3 selection given what Molchon has shown on film. Zierlein specifically notes that against Power Five competition in Florida State to open the 2019 season, Molchon was “frequently knocked off balance into contact against bigger, stronger defenders.”
  • Boise State redshirt senior G John Molchon has accepted an invitation to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
Molchon (6'5/318) was a first team all-Mountain West selection for the second time in as many years this season, starting all 13 of Boise State’s games. Prior to the start of the 2019 campaign the redshirt senior appeared on Bruce Feldman’s list of the top athletic “freaks” in college football, so the athletic testing portion of the pre-draft circuit should be interesting to watch when it comes to Molchon’s prospects. He projects to be an undrafted free agent, with a shot at getting into the back end of Day 3 in April’s draft.
  • Boise State redshirt senior G John Molchon (foot) missed Saturday’s game at San Jose State due to a right foot injury.
Molchon (6'5/318) was in a walking boot before the game. He’ll have two weeks to prepare for the visiting Wyoming Cowboys with a bye next Saturday.
  • Boise State redshirt senior G John Molchon can hang clean 425 pounds and power clean 365 pounds.
Molchon (6'5/322) slots in as Bruce Feldman’s No. 42 “Freak” in college football. In addition to his brute strength, Feldman passes along that the redshirt senior has the hops to get that big ol’ body up for a 27.5-inch vertical jump. Said BSU strength coach Jeff Pitman of his athletically-gifted pupil, “Not only does he lift heavy weight with ease, but he lifts his team’s energy level when he is in the room.” Molchon put all this impressive physical upside to use as a 13-game starter at left guard last season, earning first-team All-Mountain West honors along the way.
