Kyle Cook, not fourth-round rookie Jonathan Luigs, is the early leader to start at center for the Bengals.
Another non-drafted player, Nate Livings, is penciled in as the starting left guard. Those expecting a drastically improved Bengals offensive line this season are jumping the gun. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if the unit struggles mightily while working in new starters at four different positions.
  • Fourth-round C Jonathan Luigs is expected to start for the Bengals this season.
He doesn’t have any legit competition after Eric Ghiaciuc was let go. The Bengals coaching staff reportedly “loves” Luigs and couldn’t believe the Razorback was available in the fourth round.

Kyle Cook has wrapped up the Bengals’ starting center job.
He beat out fourth-round pick Jonathan Luigs. A former undrafted free agent out of Michigan State, Cook has played in just five career games, all on special teams. The Bengals are high on his football IQ and communication skills, which they’ll need with new starters at four different positions on the line.
  • Bengals signed fourth-round C Jonathan Luigs to a four-year contract, including a $509,500 signing bonus.
Luigs won the Rimington Award while blocking for Felix Jones and Darren McFadden in 2007. His stock undeservedly dropped last year as Arkansas struggled (5-7, 2-6 in SEC) under Bobby Petrino. Luigs, who might’ve been a first-day pick had he declared as a junior, will push Kyle Cook to start.
  • Bengals OL Jonathan Luigs will be sidelined until training camp after undergoing arthroscopic surgery in his hips.
Luigs said the scope will take care of “soft tissue damage.” Last year’s fourth-rounder was limited to eight games of special teams duty after Kyle Cook established himself as the starting center.
  • Bengals waived C Jonathan Luigs.
Luigs underwent arthroscopic surgery on his hips in April and is still dealing with the ailment. He had been competing for a backup job.
