The Rams project No. 229 overall pick Jonathan Nelson as a free safety in their scheme.
Nelson (5'10/197) was an undersized strong safety at Oklahoma. CBS draft analyst Rob Rang interestingly called Nelson his favorite Rams pick late on the third day. Nelson only managed 17 college starts, but had five interceptions, three forced fumbles, and was the Sooners’ second-leading tackler last year. St. Louis’ safety depth chart is dreadful, so it’s not crazy to think Nelson could work his way into the lineup as a rookie.

Rams selected Oklahoma S Jonathan Nelson with the No. 229 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
Nelson was not a full-time starter until his senior season, but excelled once give the opportunity, notching 103 tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. Versatile enough to play both cornerback and safety, Nelson has solid closing speed. His ball skills are only average, however, while he can be indecisive.

Rams waived TE Fendi Onobun, RB Keith Toston, RB Chase Reynolds, and S Jonathan Nelson.
Super athletic but raw even by developmental project standards, Onobun was drafted in the sixth round last year after playing basketball at Arizona. Another team may take a flier. Toston rushed for 54 yards on 19 carries last season, but lost out when Cadillac Williams and Jerious Norwood were imported.
