Hartsfield started 10 games for the Panthers in 2022 but was not tendered as a restricted free agent. He will now reunite with new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks in San Francisco, who served as the defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach in Carolina a season ago. Expect Hartsfield to serve as secondary depth in his new home.

Hartsfield not receiving a tender comes as a bit of a surprise after the former undrafted free agent went on to start 19 games for the Panthers over the last three seasons. Hartsfield totaled 59 tackles and two TFLs for the Panthers last season and should latch on with another team as added depth in the secondary.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Hartsfield’s wrist injury is not season ending, though he could miss significant time. Carolina’s secondary, ripped by rookie QB Zach Wilson in the second half of their Week 1 game, could prove vulnerable in the short term.
