The New Orleans (0-1) looks to bounce back from a heart-breaking 31-30 overtime loss in Detroit Sunday afternoon against the Baltimore Ravens (1-0). Lamar Jackson and co. rolled over the Colts in Indianapolis in Week 1, 41-23.
The Saints scored 24 second half points to come from behind, force overtime, score in the extra session but fail on a two-point conversion attempt, ultimately losing 31-30. Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards and three touchdowns, leading all NFL quarterbacks in passing yardage after Week 1. He completed 35 passes and repeatedly pushed the ball downfield, helping New Orleans rack up 469 total yards. Wide receiver Chris Olave was spectacular, catching 10 passes for 182 yards, while running back Travis Etienne contributed both as a runner and receiver (46yds rushing, 32yds receiving). The loss can be pinned on the defense which allowed 165 rushing yards and simply could not get stops on the second half and overtime.
Baltimore looked as dominant in its season-opening victory as the 41-23 final score indicates. Lamar Jackson threw for 324 yards, running back Derrick Henry rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns, and wide receiver Zay Flowers exploded for 150 receiving yards. Baltimore finished with 506 total yards and scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions. The defense was equally impressive. The Ravens forced two turnovers, held Indianapolis to 149 passing yards, and limited the Colts to just 3-of-10 on third down.
This game will be decided in the trenches. Can New Orleans stop or even slow down Derrick Henry? It looked effortless last weekend for Henry. It can’t be that easy this weekend for him or it will be a long afternoon for New Orleans. The Saints will need another big day from Shough and Olave if they are to compete for and ultimately earn their first win of the young season.
Game Note: Baltimore’s Week 1 win featured a 300-yard passer, a 150-yard receiver, and a 100-yard rusher, a first in franchise history.
