Titans vs. Texans prediction: Odds, expert picks, QB matchup, injury update, betting trends, and stats

Few would have pegged Sunday’s game in Nashville as a battle to escape the cellar in the AFC South, but that is exactly what we are staring at when the Houston Texans (0-4) visit the Tennessee Titans (0-4) at Nissan Stadium this weekend.

A preseason darling among many prognosticators, the Texans have disappointed primarily because their dominant defense from a season ago is nowhere to be found. There were questions surrounding C.J. Stroud and his ability to reach the next level, but he has quieted the critics (at least for now) by throwing for 1141 yards and five touchdowns without turning the ball over through the Texans’ first four games.

Cam Ward, on the other hand, has many wondering if the Titans should draft another quarterback come April. The sophomore slinger is completing just 63% of his passes and has thrown just three touchdown passes through four games. The supporting cast is still lacking some punch, but Ward must be better for the Titans to move forward as a franchise.

Although still without a win, Houston put forth its most encouraging performance of the season last weekend, a 34-30 loss to the Cowboys. The Texans led for much of the afternoon before fading late. Stroud threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns. It was Houston’s fourth straight defeat, but also its closest sign yet of a breakthrough. Tennessee also remained winless last week, falling 24-18 at Baltimore. The Titans were competitive throughout but as we alluded earlier, they once again struggled offensively, continuing a season-long trend that has left them near the bottom of the league in scoring and total offense.

Both teams’ pursuit of the playoffs may realistically be over, but a loss this weekend leaves no debate. This game is a must-win for both these franchises.

Let’s dive into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Latest Game Odds: Texans vs. Titans

The latest odds as of Wednesday courtesy of DraftKings:

  • Moneyline: Houston Texans (-375), Tennessee Titans (+295)
  • Spread: Texans -7.5
  • Total: 37.5

Despite not having won a single game this season, the Texans are the overwhelming choice of the market. Houston opened as a 3.5-point favorite, but that number has swelled to north of a touchdown. The Total, though, has shrunk six points. It currently is the lowest Total on the board in Week 5.

Expert Picks & Predictions: Texans vs. Titans

Our model calculates projections around each moneyline, spread and over/under bet for every game on the NFL calendar based on data points like past performance, player matchups, betting trends, and weather forecasts.

Once the model is finished running, we put its projection next to the latest betting lines for the game to arrive at a relative confidence level for each wager.

Here are the best bets our model is projecting for Sunday’s game between the Texans and the Titans:

  • Moneyline: NBC Sports is staying away from a play on the Moneyline.
  • Spread: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Texans -7.5.
  • Total: NBC Sports is leaning towards a play on the Total OVER 37.5.

Here’s why the Titans +7.5 is the play:

The market is pricing Houston as if they are the same team as a year ago. They are not. To date this team is just not getting enough stops. Tough to cover a touchdown with the hook on the road without a better defense.
The Titans went into Baltimore as double-digit underdogs and lost by six.

The head-to-head history has produced an average margin of just 6.3 points over the last 10 meetings — below the current spread. This has all the makings of a one-score game especially with Tennessee playing at home.
