Vikings vs. Saints prediction: Odds, expert picks, QB matchup, injury update, betting trends, and stats

The undefeated but offensively challenged Minnesota Vikings (4-0) head to the Caesars Superdome on Sunday to face the defensively challenged New Orleans Saints (1-3). Minnesota sits alone atop the NFC North, while New Orleans is third in the NFC South. Despite a miserable start to the season the Saints are just one game off the pace in the division behind Atlanta and Carolina. The Vikings lead their division by one game over the Bears.

Minnesota enters the week fresh off a 15-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The Vikings’ defense once again led the way. After allowing 22 points to the Packers in Week 1, Minnesota has given up a total of 29 points over their last three games. They are 4-0 despite an anemic offense. Both Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz have stepped under center for the Vikings this season and each has had issues putting points on the board. They have scored 47 points over the last three weeks. But they have done just enough on offense to pair with a lights-out defense to sit at 4-0 just about a quarter of the way through the season.

New Orleans’ offense has been better than good but they have but one win because the defense is one of the league’s worst. Monday night they were drubbed by Atlanta, 45-24, in a game that was not as close as even the lopsided score. Led by second-year quarterback Tyler Shough, the Saints are averaging 26 points per game, but they own a -5 turnover differential. That is not the primary reason for the defense’s woes but it’s a part of the story. At the end of the day, the defense is allowing 32 points per game due to a quiet pass rush and a propensity for giving up chunk plays to opposing offenses. That is simply not a recipe for winning football. Somehow, though, New Orleans is still just one game behind the leaders in the NFC South.

The matchup to watch is how Murray fares against a porous Saints’ defense and if Shough can survive against the ferocious pass rush of the Vikings.

Historically, these franchises have produced several memorable meetings, particularly in the postseason. Their most recent matchups, however, have come in the regular season. On Nov. 12, 2023, the Vikings defeated the Saints 27-19. They also knocked off the Saints in London during the 2022 season, 28-25.

Let’s dive into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Expert Picks & Predictions: Vikings vs. Saints

Please bet responsibly. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call the National Gambling Helpline at 1-800-522-4700.

Our model calculates projections around each moneyline, spread and over/under bet for every game on the NFL calendar based on data points like past performance, player matchups, betting trends, and weather forecasts.

Once the model is finished running, we put its projection next to the latest betting lines for the game to arrive at a relative confidence level for each wager.

Here are the best bets our model is projecting for Sunday’s game between the Vikings and the Saints:

  • Moneyline: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Vikings on the Moneyline.
  • Spread: NBC Sports is leaning towards a play on the Vikings -1.5.
  • Total: NBC Sports is leaning towards a play on the Game Total OVER 42.5.

Here’s why the OVER is worth a look:

Yes, this is counterintuitive. Minnesota’s defense has been the best unit in football. They’ve conceded just four touchdowns in four games. The Vikings are allowing 289.3 total yards per contest (5th in the NFL) and 12.8 points per game (1st). AND, defense travels. However, New Orleans has been a disaster on defense. The Saints are allowing 32.0 points per game (32nd), 147.8 rushing yards per game, and 5.05 yards per carry. They’ve conceded 16 touchdowns and 128 points, and they just gave up 205 rushing yards on 35 carries (5.9 yards per rush) to Atlanta in a 45-24 loss. Both QBs will find a way to get in the endzone a few times Sunday.
