The Bengals’ suddenly rekindled interest in receiver Terrell Owens prompted some to wonder whether the team was having a case of buyer’s remorse regarding receiver Antonio Bryant, who was signed by Cincy not long after T.O. visited the team in March.
Though that may be the case, the Bengals likely won’t be dumping Bryant in the near future. Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer points out that the team already has paid Bryant $7.85 million in signing, roster, and workout bonuses.
Per NFLPA records, Bryant’s base salary is only $1.55 million for 2010; thus, cutting him won’t translate into any significant savings this year.
As to 2011, Bryant’s status depends on his performance this year, and whether Owens will return for a second season. But Bryant definitely will be in jeopardy of being cut. His base salary bumps up to $4.75 million.
