There’s a lot of excitement around the league right now as teams add big names through free agency, but Tuesday has also brought a reminder that some of today’s splashy acquisitions will turn into tomorrow’s massive disappointments.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Buccaneers have released offensive tackle Anthony Collins a year after signing a five-year, $30 million contract. The team will still owe Collins $3 million in guaranteed money, which will count as $3 million in dead money under the cap.

Collins had a rough time at left tackle for Tampa in his 10 starts last season and the writing of his departure was on the wall when word came out of Tampa recently that the team wanted to trade Collins. Given his play and his contract, their inability to do so doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

Collins wasn’t the only disappointing free agent addition in Tampa last year. Quarterback Josh McCown has already been cut and defensive end Michael Johnson may follow the other two players out the door if the team decides he won’t rebound in his second year with the team.
