The Chiefs are getting a potential defensive starter back for the second half of the season.

Kansas City has removed inside linebacker Joe Mays from injured reserve/designated for return and added him to the roster, the team announced Saturday.

The 29-year-old Mays missed the first eight games of the regular season after surgery on a wrist tendon. He started the first two exhibition games at left inside linebacker before leaving the lineup. Mays signed with the Chiefs in March after recording 67 tackles in 14 games for Houston a season ago.

To make room for Mays, the Chiefs waived reserve inside linebacker Jerry Franklin, a second-year pro from Arkansas. The 26-year-old Franklin appeared in seven games this season for Kansas City (5-3), notching four tackles.
