Although some think the Cowboys should draft a quarterback with the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft, they’ve recently worked out a passer who will be available on Day 2 or Day 3.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Cowboys held a private workout for Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg yesterday.

Hackenberg had a very good freshman season at Penn State in 2013, playing for coach Bill O’Brien. But when O’Brien left for the Texans, Hackenberg struggled in 2014 and 2015. Some teams reportedly don’t like the way Hackenberg has blamed his struggles on O’Brien’s replacement, James Franklin.

Although Hackenberg has a good arm and may some day become a good NFL quarterback, the Cowboys wouldn’t feel great about having to turn to him as a rookie if Tony Romo got hurt. If they were to draft him, he’d likely be behind both Romo and Kellen Moore on the depth chart in 2016.

It remains to be seen whether the Cowboys will bring in the kind of veteran quarterback who’d be ready to play immediately if Romo got hurt. The Cowboys could use such a quarterback; in their last 36 games the Cowboys are 17-5 with Romo and 1-13 without him.
