Gary Glick, selected No. 1 overall in the 1956 NFL Draft by the Steelers, passed away Wednesday in Fort Collins, Colorado at age 84, Colorado State University announced today, confirming media reports.
Glick starred at Colorado A&M, which is now known as Colorado State. According to the school, he played linebacker, quarterback, halfback and kicker while in college. In the pros, he played defensive back, intercepting 14 passes in seven NFL seasons. He also kicked field goals and extra points early in his career.
According to the league’s draft records, Glick is the only defensive back ever selected No. 1 overall.
In addition to his time with Pittsburgh (1956-1959), Glick played for Washington (1959-1960), Baltimore (1961) and San Diego (1963).
Glick is survived by his wife, three children, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, Colorado State said.
