While the ostensible purpose of the NFL Scouting Combine is to research and identify college prospects, the bigger business happening in hallways and steakhouses in Indianapolis is for proven players.

Along those lines, Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan is meeting with the agent for defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson this week about a contract extension, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Wilkerson is entering the final year of his rookie deal, but doing something now makes sense for the Jets, since they have a pile of salary cap room (which Maccagnan is thanking John Idzik for not using) and can make Wilkerson a centerpiece player in new coach Todd Bowles’ defense.
