Rex Ryan suggests “drastic changes” could be coming to Buffalo

Patrick Smith

The Bills fell to 6-8 on Sunday, ensuring that they won’t match last year’s winning record as they’ve fallen far short of the expectations set during coach Rex Ryan’s introductory press conference in January.

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins responded to the most recent loss by saying that the Bills needed to forget about sparing people’s feelings and get rid of anyone who isn’t doing their job. Ryan sent a similar message during his session with the media by hinting at the changes that will follow a disappointing season.

“If we don’t get better, the reality of it is this: This is professional,” Ryan said, via Syracuse.com. “This is the National Football League, and unless we get a heck of a lot better, there’s going to be changes. That’s what I told them: There’s going to be drastic changes.”

Ryan didn’t elaborate on potential changes, although defensive end Mario Williams appears to believe he’s reached the end of the line in Buffalo. Defense figures to be a focal point this offseason -- it was for Bills owner Terry Pegula’s son in a since-deleted tweet sent during the game -- after the unit failed to produce after being near the top of the league in 2014.

That should fall on Ryan’s shoulders, but it’s hard to see Pegula parting ways with the coach when there are still four years to go on the $27.5 million contract that Ryan signed when he came aboard. There has been talk of a change involving General Manager Doug Whaley, however, and the Bills should be exploring every option available to make good on the playoff return that Ryan promised almost a year ago.
