Packers hired DeMarcus Covington, formerly of the Patriots, as their DL coach.
Covington spent last season as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator but first joined their staff in 2017 as a coaching assistant. He was promoted to their DL coach in 2020 and served in that role until 2023. It was reported earlier that Covington, who interviewed earlier this month for the Bengals’ defensive coordinator vacancy, was not expected to return to the Patriots after they went out and hired Mike Vrabel as head coach. Now, he’ll have a chance to start over in Green Bay. In addition to Covington, the Packers also hired former quarterback Sean Mannion as their quarterbacks coach.
  • SEA Quarterback #15
Seahawks elevated QB Sean Mannion for Week 15 against the Eagles.
The quarterback elevated comes with starter Geno Smith questionable with a groin injury, potentially signaling that Smith is not expected to be available for the team’s game against the Eagles. The Seahawks could still render Mannion inactive to be used as their emergency quarterback, so keep an eye on the inactives list 90 minutes prior to kickoff.

    Vikings released QB Sean Mannion.
When the Vikings traded for Nick Mullens, the writing was on the wall for Mannion and sophomore Kellen Mond. Both were cut Tuesday. Mannion has made three NFL starts since entering the league in 2015 and is 0-3 with a pitiful 5.2 YPA average. He’s not a capable fill-in starter.

  • JAX Quarterback #12
Vikings acquired QB Nick Mullens from the Raiders in exchange for a conditional 2024 seventh-round pick.
Perhaps the Vikings are less than thrilled with the performance of Kirk Cousins’ backups this preseason. Sean Mannion has completed 66% of his attempts for a meager 5.3 yards per attempt. Sophomore Kellen Mond has been erratic in two appearances, completing 55.5% of his throws for two touchdowns and two picks. Mond also wasn’t picked by the new Minnesota regime. Mullens, with a career 64.7% completion rate and 26 touchdown passes over 20 appearances, should be the favorite to open the season as Cousins’ No. 2.

Vikings re-signed QB Sean Mannion to a one-year contract.
A favorite of former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, Mannion will play a fourth season as Minnesota’s backup with the team’s new coaching staff. Mannion has completed 60.9 percent of his passes and thrown one touchdown and three interceptions in his six NFL seasons. He could once again be ahead of 2021 third-round pick QB Kellen Mond on the Vikings depth chart.

  • FA Quarterback #8
Asked if he wanted to get rookie QB Kellen Mond playing time in Week 18, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said “not particularly.”
“I see him every day,” Zimmer said in response to a follow-up question on why he wouldn’t want Mond to get some regular season playing time in the Vikings’ meaningless Week 18 game against the Bears. It was an ice-cold response from a coach who will surely be fired at season’s end after two straight seasons in which his team missed the playoffs. Zimmer’s inglorious run as Minnesota’s head coach was doomed by a forced marriage between him and Kirk Cousins, who missed the team’s critical Week 17 game against the Packers with COVID-19. Zimmer chose Sean Mannion over Mond -- the team’s second-round draft pick -- despite Mannion’s disastrous track record. The Vikings will likely start from scratch in 2022.

Sean Mannion completed 22-of-36 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings’ Week 17 loss to the Packers.
Mannion predictably struggled in his first start since 2019. The Vikings couldn’t get anything going in the first half and Mannion was frequently off-target with his throws. While he was generally pretty safe with the ball – he did not throw an interception – Minnesota struggled mightily to move the ball down the field with the journeyman veteran under center. He did pioneer some longer drives in the second half, but the game was already out of hand by that point. Kirk Cousins should be back for Week 18, and Mannion will return to his rightful spot on the Vikings’ bench if they play their starters.

  • GB Coaching Staff #15
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said QB Sean Mannion will start in Week 17 against the Packers.
Zimmer added that there “wasn’t any consideration” of starting rookie Kellen Mond. Mannion, a seven-year veteran, will instead make his third career start in the frozen single-digit tundra of Lambeau Field on Sunday night, replacing Kirk Cousins (COVID) in a must-win affair. His last start in 2019 resulted in two interceptions and an eye-popping 6.0 yards per attempt for Minnesota. Managers should (slightly) downgrade Justin Jefferson given the woeful situation under center.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said Sean Mannion “should be in line to start” Week 17 against the Packers.
Mannion was removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list just in time to draw the start in place of Kirk Cousins, who has the virus and won’t be able to play against Green Bay. Mannion, who has completed 60.8 percent of his NFL passes for three interceptions and no touchdowns over five seasons, will go against one of the league’s top secondaries on Sunday night. Good luck to him. Look for the Vikings to do anything and everything to establish the run against a vulnerable Packers rush defense.

  • ATL Quarterback #18
Vikings placed Kirk Cousins on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Minnesota’s playoff hopes are officially dashed with Cousins on the COVID list. This was always the fear after QB Sean Mannion tested positive for the virus early this week. Mannion could be cleared today or tomorrow ahead of the team’s Sunday night game against Green Bay. It’s uncertain whether Mannion or rookie QB Kellen Mond would get the start in place of Cousins, who cannot test out of the protocol because he is unvaccinated. It will be tough to trust any fantasy-relevant Viking this week with Cousins out. Mond, who presumably brings some rushing upside, could be interesting in superflex formats.
