Free agent RB Spencer Brown worked out for the Bears on Sunday.
The report comes from NBC Houston’s Aaron Wilson. Brown has totaled just 31 offensive snaps and 17 special teams snaps since the Panthers signed him as a 2021 undrafted free agent and the Bears’ running back room is already four-players deep. He is unlikely to be fantasy-relevant in 2024.
  • FA Safety #20
    Panthers released S Eric Rowe.
Rowe was signed to a one-year deal this offseason after playing in 14 games with the Dolphins in 2022. The veteran safety struggled in pass coverage last year, earning a PFF coverage grade of 49.5 while allowing 39 receptions for 489 yards on 47 targets. In addition to Rowe, the Panthers also waived RB Spencer Brown.
  • CAR Running Back #30
Panthers assistant head coach Duce Staley said he wants to use “three good running backs”.
Staley added that playing the running back position is like being in a car wreck. With 1,420 carries over a 10-year career in the NFL, Staley knows better than most the physical toll playing running back takes on players. Staley noted in the same press conference that he wants the team to bring back D’Onta Foreman in free agency. For now, only Chuba Hubbard, Raheem Blackshear, and Spencer Brown are under contract for 2023. Whether or not Foreman is brought back, expect the Panthers to add more starting potential to their backfield in the offseason.

  • FA Running Back
Spencer Brown rushed 11 times for 57 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers’ third preseason game.
Brown played behind Chuba Hubbard with Christian McCaffrey sitting out. The undrafted rookie had one of the highlights of the night on a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter. With Reggie Bonnafon and Rodney Smith injured, Brown is in position to open the season as the Panthers’ No. 3 back.

  • FA Running Back
Panthers signed UAB RB Spencer Brown.
Brown (5’11/208) was a two-star recruit and four-year starter who averaged 85 rushing yards across 47 career games. He’s a herky-jerky mover, particularly when tracking passes through the air (20 career receptions) and doesn’t have the top speed of other sub-210 pound running back prospects. At UAB, Brown operated as an every-down player and even added punt coverage duties to his resume in his final collegiate season. To earn a backup job with the Panthers, Brown will have to provide special teams value and improve his comfortability during passing situations. He has plenty of experience in a zone-blocking scheme.

  • FA Running Back
UAB senior RB Spencer Brown declared for the NFL Draft.
Brown (6'0/220) has been the epidemy of a bell cow running back over his four-year tenure as a starting running back for the Blazers. The senior recorded 186 carries in nine games this season for 889 yards and ten touchdowns. He finished his career on a high note, rushing for at least 100-yards in five of his last six games. Brown possesses the size and elusiveness that should earn him a look on Sundays. The 4,000-yard career rusher projects as a Day 3 selection.

  • FA Running Back
UAB senior RB Spencer Brown carried the ball 30 times for 149 yards in a 22-13 win on Friday over Marshall in the Conference USA Championship Game.
Brown missed the previous game against Rice, but was back on the field, and once again was an effective plower while leading the Blazers to a conference title. The 6-foot, 220-pound tailback would have been a thousand-yard back if there would have been a full complement of games, and went over the century mark for the fourth time in five games. Brown is going to get looks as an NFL back after the season, but will get one more chance to add to his numbers in a bowl game.

  • FA Running Back
UAB will be without 12 players for Saturday’s game vs. Rice, including running backs Spencer Brown and DeWayne McBride.
The Blazers have been battling COVID-19 issues recently, so it’s possible that this may be why so many players have been ruled out. As for the running back position, with Brown (6'0/220) and McBride (5'11/220) sidelined UAB will be without its top two rushers. Brown has accounted for 740 yards and ten touchdowns on the ground, while McBride is averaging just over ten yards per carry and has tallied 396 yards and four touchdowns. Jermaine Brown Jr. is available, and he’ll have to shoulder much of the load with Brown and McBride out.

  • FA Running Back
UAB senior RB Spencer Brown rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in Saturday’s 37-34 double-overtime loss at Louisiana Tech.
Brown (6'0/220) was nearly unstoppable during the second and third quarters of Saturday’s game. But Louisiana Tech was able to load the box during the fourth quarter, and with UAB’s quarterbacks struggling to make plays in the passing game the Bulldogs were able to rally and force overtime. Brown, who has been the leader in the ground game for UAB, is now up to 740 rushing yards and ten rushing touchdowns on 156 carries. No other Blazers player has more than 50 rushing attempts this season (Jermaine Brown). Next up for Brown and the Blazers is a November 14 matchup with North Texas.

  • FA Running Back
UAB senior RB Spencer Brown earned 28 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s 24-20 loss to Louisiana.
Brown (6'0/220) has been the heart and soul for the UAB offense for four years now. Even in defeat, Brown was the reason the offense kept moving, once again proving himself as a back who can carry the load for the offense. He did not break off any of the long runs that may have been needed to set UAB over the top here, but he did his part in providing the Blazers offense with a stable baseline. UAB now sit at 4-2 and have Louisiana Tech on the schedule for next week.
