The Jets are looking at adding another quarterback to their broader roster.
According to Zack Rosenblatt of TheAthletic.com, New York worked out Will Levis and Jack Plummer for a spot on the practice squad on Thursday.
Levis, a second-round pick in 2023, was waived by the Titans as part of their roster cuts over the weekend and went unclaimed. While he missed the 2025 season due to injury, he started 21 games for Tennessee from 2023-2024, completing 61.0 percent of his passes for 3,899 yards with 21 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
Plummer is the UFL’s reigning MVP, having won it for his season with the Orlando Storm. He led the UFL with 2,188 passing yards while tossing 17 touchdowns with just one interception in 10 games. He previously spent time with the Panthers and worked out for the 49ers and Dolphins this summer.
New York currently has just rookie Cade Klubnik on its 53-man roster at quarterback behind starter Geno Smith. Veteran Bailey Zappe is on the team’s practice squad.
The first game of Robert Saleh’s second run as an NFL head coach comes against the team that gave him his first shot at the job.
Saleh’s Titans will host the Jets on September 13 and that will make the first time Saleh has faced the Jets since they fired him early in the 2024 season. During a press conference this week, Saleh said that any of his personal feelings about the way things ended are not going to be on his mind heading into the game.
“New York is still a special place,” Saleh said. “Gave me my first opportunity as a head coach. Our desire to win Week 1 and beat the Jets is because it’s Week 1 and nothing more. I am forever grateful for all the opportunity that they gave. I don’t hold grudges.”
The Titans have ex-Jets like Jermaine Johnson and John Franklin-Myers on the roster, but Saleh said he’s not worried about their ability to “keep the main thing the main thing” when facing their former team. Given how recent seasons have gone for both clubs, the chance to get to 1-0 should offer ample incentive outside of the shared history that will be in the air.
The Titans selected quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1 overall last year with the idea that he would become the club’s franchise quarterback.
Ward’s first season clearly did not go as planned, with former head coach Brian Callahan getting fired after the team started 1-5.
But things should be different in 2026 with Robert Saleh as head coach and Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator.
With Ward about to start his second season, his new boss has total belief in him.
“This kid’s not going to fail,” Saleh said recently, via Turron Davenport of ESPN. “Obviously, I put my job on that one, but he’s not going to fail. He’s special.”
Saleh brought in Daboll, who helped develop Bills quarterback Josh Allen as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, to accelerate Ward’s progress.
“I have a lot of confidence in this young man,” Daboll said, via Davenport. “I have confidence in how he played [in college] at Miami and Washington State, and he had a whole year under his belt in the National Football League and getting accustomed to the speed of the game and the timing. That’s not an easy thing for quarterbacks.”
What both coaches want most for Ward is for him to make the routine plays look and feel routine on a game-by-game basis.
“It comes back to time on task,” Saleh said. “Trusting yourself, trusting your teammates, play within the rhythm, rhythm of the play and get your feet in the ground and throw an accurate football. It sounds simple, but at the same time, we’ve got to be able to go do it and take it from practice to the game.”
Ward completed 60 percent of his passes as a rookie last year for 3,169 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 159 yards with two TDs.
The Raiders had the top waiver priority over the weekend and used it to pick up cornerback Darrell Luter.
It turns out they were far from the only team interested in the former 49er.
Per Field Yates of ESPN, the Titans, Dolphins, Cowboys, and Colts also put in a claim for Luter. But because the Raiders were first in line, they were the team to get him.
Yates notes no other player had more than two teams put in a claim for him.
A fifth-round pick in 2023, Luter has appeared in 27 games with three starts over the last three seasons. In 2025, he appeared in all 17 games with three starts, recording 28 total tackles with one pass defensed and one fumble recovery.
One of the quarterbacks that the Titans cut on their way to setting a 53-man roster is returning to their practice squad.
Hendon Hooker re-signed with the team on Monday. The 2023 Lions third-round pick signed with the team after spending time with the Panthers and Jets during the 2025 season.
Hooker was 9-of-13 for 89 yards during his appearances in the preseason.
The Titans also waived 2023 second-round pick Will Levis. He was not claimed on Monday and remains a free agent.
