Video: Ovechkin becomes sixth fastest player to 400 goals in Caps win

James OBrien

Alex Ovechkin is enjoying a staggering goal-scoring season, but Friday presents a reminder that he’s generating an amazing goal-scoring career. With an empty-netter in Washington’s 4-2 win against Carolina, he notched his 400th goal:

Ovechkin, 28, did so in just 634 games, becoming the sixth fastest player to reach the 400-goal plateau. Here are the icons in front of him:

1. Wayne Gretzky (436 games)
2. Mike Bossy (506)
3. Mario Lemieux (508)
4. Brett Hull (520)
5. Jari Kurri (608)

Ovechkin also had an assist on Friday, giving him 29 goals and 11 assists for 40 points in 33 games played.

(Nicklas Backstrom continues to generate great work in Ovi’s shadow, as he collected four assists as the Capitals improved to 19-13-3 on the season.)
