The coaches for Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin will also guide the U.S. teams at the biggest meet of the year, the Pan Pacific Championships in August.

North Baltimore Aquatic Club’s Bob Bowman and the University of California’s Teri McKeever were named the U.S. coaches for the Aug. 21-25 meet in Gold Coast, Australia, on Wednesday.

Bowman was an assistant coach for the U.S. at the last three Olympics. McKeever was the head coach at the London Olympics.

The Pan Pacific Championships are a once-every-four-years meet held in non-Olympic and non-World Championships years including the four nations that founded the Pan Pacific Swimming Association -- the U.S., Australia, Canada and Japan -- as well as swimmers from nations such as China and South Africa.

The U.S. Championships from Aug. 6-10 in Irvine, Calif., serve as a qualifying meet for the Pan Pacific Championships.

The 22-time Olympic medalist Phelps competed in his first meet in 20 months last week in Mesa, Ariz., and is entered in two more Grand Prix competitions before the U.S. Championships, though it hasn’t been decided if he will compete.

Franklin did not compete last week but recently finished up her freshman year at Cal, where she won an individual NCAA Championship in the 200-yard freestyle.
