Lindsey Vonn crashed while training in New Zealand on Thursday, suffered a small ankle fracture and had to fly back to the U.S., according to her social media accounts.
Vonn, 30, is coming off a successful 2014-15 World Cup season when she won eight races to give her 67 career victories, surpassing the record for most by a woman. It was her first full World Cup season since 2011-12 due to her knee injuries and surgeries that kept her out of the Sochi Olympics.
She has said her hope this upcoming season is to win her fifth World Cup overall title. Vonn was third in the standings behind Austrian Anna Fenninger and Slovenian Tina Maze last season.
The World Cup season begins Oct. 24 with a giant slalom in Soelden, Austria. Vonn is best in the speed events, and the first of those is Dec. 4 in Lake Louise, Canada.
