There will be a new Olympic gold medalist in the men’s 3m springboard.

Russia’s Ilya Zakharov arrived in Rio as the defending champion in the event, and he also took silver at the World Championships last year, with many expecting him to get onto the medal stand. Unfortunately for Zakharov things didn’t go as planned on his fourth round attempt, as his left leg gave out some upon second contact with the diving board. That resulted in an awkward attempt to salvage the dive, only to belly flop into the pool.

Zakharov isn’t the first diver to have this happen, and he won’t be the last either. And to have this happen on a stage that comes along only once every four years is unfortunate.
