Shani Davis is already considered one of the greatest U.S. Winter Olympians ever. At this point, it’s a matter of further cementing that legacy, which could get another big boost in his best event: men’s speed skating 1,000m. That race kicks off at 9 a.m. ET.
If Davis comes in first, he’ll be the first U.S. Olympian to take gold in three straight games. If he gets any medal at all, he’ll bring his total to five, which would tie Eric Heiden and Chad Hedrick for the most of any U.S. speed skater.

Davis is a dominant name in the sport, especially in the 1000m, but that doesn’t mean that he’ll glide easily to victory. Fellow U.S. speed skater Brian Hansen, Kazakh Denis Kuzin, and Norway’s Michel Mulder and Kjeld Nuis pose considerable threats.
While he seems interested in continuing to compete, Davis is 31, so this could be his best chance to make even more speed skating history.
