HOCKEY CULTURE SEASON TWO
U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Neal Henderson, the first black inductee in the Hall of Fame, joined NHL on NBC analyst Anson Carter for a conversation about his 40-plus years in grassroots work at the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club in the Washington D.C. area and the impact he has had on the youth game at the oldest minority hockey league in the country, on the latest episode of NBC Sports’ Hockey Culture.
The conversation is available now on Hockey Culture’s dedicated YouTube Channel and below are highlights:
Henderson on the power of the sport of hockey: “I use ice hockey as a key to education…what you have is the feeling of belonging to something that cared about you as much as you cared about it. I have people coming back to me, 40, 50, 60 years old, saying thanks for what you have done to lead me to where I am today.”
Henderson on his teachings to the youth at Fort Dupont: “People don’t mind helping people who are helping themselves. I’ve always said it’s better to get a hand up than a handout…always work for something and it will turn into something if you make it happen.”
Henderson on the inspiration he gets from his players: “I’ve got longevity so far (laughter)…it makes me feel a part of their life that I’ve been able to fulfill something they’ve wanted.”
OUR LINE STARTS
