Read inked a minor league contract with Chicago back in February and hit a solid .303/.396/.557 with 18 home runs and 71 RBI across 364 plate appearances this season between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. The 28-year-old catcher last appeared in the majors back in 2019 when he got into six games for the Nationals.

Read appeared in 14 games for the Nationals from 2017 to 2019 and spent the vast majority of last season at Triple-A Rochester, hitting .288/.326/.575 with six homers in 86 plate appearances. The 28-year-old backstop will bolster the White Sox’ organizational catching depth this upcoming season.

Read did not appear in a game this season at the major league level and he is now off the 40-man roster.

Read was up as the 29th man for Saturday’s doubleheader against the Mets. He didn’t appear in either game.

The move clears a spot for the newly-added Josh Harrison on the 40-man roster. Read didn’t see any game action as the Nats’ third catcher behind Kurt Suzuki and Yan Gomes.

Suzuki was removed for a pinch-hitter after injuring himself while blocking a pitch in the sixth inning. General Manager Mike Rizzo said the club is fairly confident that Suzuki will not have to be replaced on the roster, but if he is unable to play the team would replace him with Raudy Read. Yan Gomes will catch starter Patrick Corbin in Saturday’s Game 4.

There was hope that Suzuki would be ready to go, but he’s at about “70-75 percent” right now, so the Nationals aren’t going to push things. However, the belief is that he would be ready to go if it was the Wild Card game. Raudy Read will start the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader while Yan Gomes will start the second game.
