Just 6-foot-1, 229 at his Combine weigh-in, the Bengals were pleasantly surprised when Porter reported to rookie minicamp at 237 pounds. He’s a possible long-term successor to James Harrison as a pass-rushing SAM linebacker. As a rookie, Porter will focus on special teams.

Porter (6-foot-1 1/4, 229) played both 3-4 rush linebacker and 4-3 weak-side ‘backer as the Aggies underwent scheme change during his career. He’s at his best as a nickel rusher with an ability to bend the edge. Porter ran 4.75 at the Combine with a 1.63 ten-yard split and pumped 225 pounds 22 times on the bench. He’s likely to play special teams as a rookie, and could be James Harrison’s eventual replacement at strong-side linebacker.

Porter, the Bengals’ fourth-round pick this season, tore his labrum. The move to put him on injured reserve suggests surgery is needed. Porter was only ticketed for a deep reserve role at SAM linebacker behind James Harrison and special teams duties as a rookie.

LB Khairi Fortt was claimed off waivers from the Saints in a corresponding roster move. It’s the second straight season Porter, the No. 118 overall pick of last year’s draft, will finish on injured reserve. He’s made just one career appearance. He’s in danger of washing out of the league even though he’s only 23.
