Saints signed Maryland LB Shaq Smith.
A former four-star prospect who was rated as a top-100 player from IMG Academy coming out of the 2016 prep class, Smith (6’3/237) originally enrolled at Clemson where he spent three years on campus as a reserve linebacker. He transferred to Maryland as a graduate in 2019 where he started 10-of-11 games while registering 24 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1.0 sack and four PBU. While Smith flashes the ability to cover running backs and tight ends, he was mostly responsible for creating pressure and running down ball carriers. His anticipation skills are lacking and he doesn’t have the technique to stand up to pulling linemen in the run game. An average athlete, Smith ran an uninspiring 4.79-second 40-yard dash, 30” vertical jump and 4.2 RAS score. His relatively mundane athleticism and dearth of collegiate production could hamper his ability to make an impact at the next level. He bears some resemblance to Abdul Hodge.
