Arsene Wenger taking $27 million “gamble” on teenager Calum Chambers
On Monday Arsenal are expected to complete the signing of Southampton’s versatile 19-year-old Calum Chambers, as Arsene Wenger continues to wheel and deal in the transfer market.
Chambers is all set for a shock switch to the Gunners after playing just 21 Premier League games for Saints in his debut season as a professional last term.

Arsenal have already signed Chilean international Alexis Sanchez, French right back Mathieu Debuchy and Colombian national team ‘keeper David Opsina this summer, who all impressed at the World Cup for their respective nations. As for Chambers, last season he was the captain for the England Under-19 side.
Speaking to reporters about the move for the man who can play right back, center back and in central midfield, Wenger admitted he is taking a calculated risk when it comes to this acquisition.
In the past Arsenal have twice purchased teenagers from Southampton, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and both have worked out pretty well. However Walcott and Oxlade-Chamerblain weren’t as expensive as Chambers could turn out to be after the attackers both cost around $20 million.
Chambers will add strength in several positions for Arsenal and certainly showed plenty of promise at right back for Saints last season. The Hampshire-born teenager played with Manchester United’s Luke Shaw since the age of 7 as they came up through the youth ranks as Saints together and some argue Chambers is better equipped to go further than United’s $55 million man who became the most expensive teenager ever this summer. Having had the chance to chat with Chambers on a few occasions, he has a tremendously mature head on his shoulders, is focused and is the model professional.
Arsenal may be taking a “gamble” in Wenger’s words, but there are many better English defenders out there at the moment. The Gunners may have just nicked yet another talented teenager from Southampton for an absolute bargain.
