On Friday, it seemed as though Fabio Borini’s move from Liverpool to Sunderland was finished, with only the official photo of him lifting a Sunderland scarf needing to be snapped. Now, though, it looks as though it may be difficult to convince the Italian that a permanent move to the Stadium of Light would be in his best interest.
Gus Poyet confirmed on Saturday that his side had agreed a fee with Liverpool for the transfer of the striker. But reports from Italy suggest Borini does not want to leave the Reds. However, Brendan Rodgers has deemed the 23-year-old surplus to requirements ... and it’s not as though there are plenty of other offers coming in.
Borini joined Chelsea’s youth system in 2007, and made four appearances for the senior squad before moving to Parma, who immediately loaned him to Roma. He did well for the capital club, scoring nine goals in 24 appearances and catching Liverpool’s eye.
He moved to Liverpool in 2012, making waves as Rodgers’ first signing for the club. But the forward suffered two serious injuries in his first season, keeping him out for five months. Then it was off to Sunderland on a season-long loan. Borini scored ten goals for the Black Cats last season, including four in the last five games as the team managed to miraculously avoid the drop.
So there’s little wonder that Poyet wants to keep him around. At this point, Borini likely has little choice in the matter, but as of now he remains a Liverpool player. But as Rodgers says, “When that changes, I’m sure you’ll be among the first to know.”
