She was hailed upon her NWSL arrival as the best Irish striker, and months later she’s gone.

That’s life in American women’s soccer, says former Houston Dash and current Sunderland Ladies player Stephanie Roche.

One day you’re nominated for the Puskas Award; The next, you’re on your fourth club in one year.

Roche says she has no regrets, but her release caught her off guard.

From the BBC:

“I was doing well but I wasn’t getting much game time,” she told BBC Sport.

“I got back from international duty to be told I was being released. It was a big shock.”

Roche... was released to free up space for two more players.

“I think it’s taught me a lesson that with football, it can be cut-throat in America,” added Roche, who had signed a two-year deal with Houston Dash.

Competition for spaces is tough when the arguable stronghold of the women’s game, the United States, has just nine teams. Tough break for Roche.
