Stoke City announce club record $20 million signing of winger Xherdan Shaqiri

Stoke City continue to make waves in the transfer market, as the Potters have pulled off yet another astonishing piece of business.

On Tuesday the Premier League side announced they had completed a club record $20 million deal with Inter Milan for Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri, 23, had been linked with a move to Stoke earlier this summer but everything went quiet as a host of teams competing in the UEFA Champions League across Europe were linked with the speedy winger.

However, Shaqiri was spotted at the Britannia Stadium watching Stoke’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday and 48 hour later, he’s a Potter. Stoke take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Saturday (Watch live, 10 a.m. ET online via Live Extra) as Shaqiri could make his debut in the PL.

The Swiss international shone at the World Cup last summer, scoring a hat trick against Honduras in a group stage win but struggled to replicate that form at Inter Milan after leaving Bayern Munich in January 2015. The man who made his name with FC Basel is a key addition for Stoke boss Mark Hughes and falls in line with a string of surprising signings Stoke have managed to pull off over the past 12 months.

First, playmaker Bojan Krkic (you know, the guy they called the next Messi) arrived from Barcelona, then this summer Ibrahim Afellay also arrived from the Nou Camp and now Shaqiri has signed on in Staffordshire as Stoke have real ambition of challenging for a top six finish this season.

Last season Hughes’ men recorded their highest-ever points tally in the PL and their highest-finish as they finished in ninth spot, and despite losing Steven Nzonzi and Asmir Begovic this summer, they have signed 12 players in the current transfer window as their massive strengthening process continues.

Here are a few snaps of Shaqiri in red and white stripes, as its clear for everyone to see that Stoke mean business this season.
