Two things ring the bell of importance around today’s news that Jermaine Jones has signed with Turkish club Beşiktaş, as MLSSoccer.com’s European-based writer Greg Seltzer reports today.

First, so much for Jones (pictured above, on the right) being imported to MLS. It was always a bit of a longshot, as the longtime Bundesliga veteran always stood a better chance of landing bigger money by remaining across the Atlantic. Yes, that’s changing some with the big stacks of cash being handed to players like Michael Bradley and Maurice Edu. (And Jones is a better player at this point than Edu, which is important to note since they occupy the same position.)

Too bad, though, because Jones’ style and the way he carries himself would have instantly enshrined him as an MLS figure who deserved attention. That is, it would have been a real hoot to have him in MLS.

Secondly, this is good news for the national team. He was clearly on the outs at Schalke and could have collected some damaging rust through the spring.

You don’t have to ask around much to find a U.S. Soccer fan who isn’t particularly fond of Jones as a national team starter; it’s hard to tell what is generally more damaging to the team, his consistent ability to pick up cards. his consistent inability to safely move the ball through the midfield or his frequent bouts of tactical indiscipline in straying out of the defensive midfield area.

But Jurgen Klinsmann long ago adjudged that Jones’ positives outweigh his negatives, so he’s first on the depth chart at the holding mid spot.
