In honor of the 96 Liverpool fans who died on April 15th, 1989, at an FA Cup semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium, each Premier League team held a minute of silence at 3:06 p.m. BST (10:06 a.m. ET) on Saturday. The matches then began at seven minutes past the hour.
Across the country, across every division of English soccer, teams commemorated the Hillsborough disaster with silence and delayed kickoffs. The video screens showed tributes. At Wembley, where Arsenal and Wigan faced off in this season’s FA Cup semi-final, 96 seats were left open, draped with Liverpool scarves in remembrance of those who lost their lives.
The silence will continue Sunday, with delayed kickoffs in both the league and the second FA Cup match.
